Need ideas for plants/bushes/flowers for our new yard.?

We just bought a house and most of the plants and bushes in the yard are dead. I%26#039;m just going to pull everything for now. Does anyone have any ideas for hearty plants that can last year round? And when would be the best time to plant them? We live in Virginia and the temp gets down into the high teens, low 20%26#039;s in the winter and up to the high 90%26#039;s in the summer. Thanks!

FlowersBirthday FlowersSympathy FlowersHi:

Living in Virginia you have so many possibilities. Most of my clients want low maintenance shrubs. Evergreens are real popular now. Even though you get down into the twenties during the winter months, if your ground doesn%26#039;t freeze, you can get some trees and evergreen shrubs planted. The most important phase of landscaping is to properly plan - prep - and then plant your specimens.

I will link you to my plan - prep -plant page as well as my site map. The site map has everything that is on the website. I am a landscape and designer and have had several clients that have been in your shoes. There are so many evergreens that flower and with your geographic location, you can have some great color as well as texture. Variegated evergreen shrubs will add some nice color with some solids.

If you need some help, please feel free to contact me at the website. I hope this will help you get started and best of luck to you. Have a great day!

Reply:Conifers and Hollies would probabl be your best bet.
Reply:If you have poor soil, it does not matter where you live. All plants need water and nutrients from the soil. When you get ready to re-do the garden, you might want to go to a garden center and ask what plants do best in your region. I like azaleas and dogwood, for a regional plant. I live in California where we can garden all year round, but the plants here are different. Why dont you go to some gardening sites on the internet while it is still winter time and google botanical gardens near you. You can go visit them and get ideas.. Also some old historic places have nice gardens. I went to Dumbarton Oaks in WASHINGTON DC one time and they had some nice gardens too. Go for walks and see what does well in the neighborhood yards. Also, if the entire thing is dead, you can perhaps do sections such an area for Shade, a vegetable garden and a separate flower garden. Go to the library too, there are so many books!
Reply:The best time to plant is in the spring and fall. You should look for evergreens like holly, pine, etc or any conifers. Also shrubs like rhododenron, azalea, japanese andromeda, butterfly bush, and hydrangea. Even ornamental trees like the weeping willow and weeping cherry or the crabapple are nice additions. These plants flower during the spring and summer so its a nice way to have color in your yard.nanny

Reply:Marigolds are a good plant for a beginner to grow..there are many varieties so you can mix and match with hues of different colors...once they take off and start flowering..They will increase immensely...When a flower dies down and crinkles up..pull that head off and dry it and save it..You pull it apart each head will have 30 to 50 seeds in each one...
Reply:Call your local Drug Enforcment Agency. They will be more than happy to come out and help you. Look in the phone book under the government listings. (Blue Pages)
Reply:Millionbells. They bloom like crazy all summer long and look like miniature petunias.
Reply:The answer to your flower needs is a fuchsia, begonia (is a tuber), or geranium plant, or all of the above. They are easy to grow and will bloom their little hearts out for you. They all require lite shade, not full sun, never allow to dry out. I have several and keep them for the patio every year. All that is necessary to over winter is to cut them back and place in a cool dry area such as a garage and pull them out in spring. I have had mine for many years. The variety in each of these choices is amazing. Color, size, and even topiary size are available. Just up to your imagination. Good luck and have fun.Reebok

Stem to flowers on tomato plants turn yellow and the flower dies What to do?

why does the stem to the flowers on my tomato plants turn yellow and the flower dies?
Say
FlowersBirthday FlowersSympathy FlowersThe plant is protecting itself, and it does so by dropping the flowers. Something is stressing the plant and it can be as simple as the night time temps are not high enough yet to set fruit or it may have a virus. It would take a ton of information to even begin to guess at the problem.
Reply:The plant probably has a fungus. A lot of tomato varieties are succeptible to virus and fungus diseases. I doubt if there%26#039;s anything to be done about it. If you don%26#039;t want to toss them and start over call the county extension service, take them a sample and they can confirm what you%26#039;ve got. Usually its not worth the time and expense of treating a diseased plant. But that%26#039;s up to you.

Next year try a different variety than you planted this year. Or plant antique or heritage seeds.
Reply:Dont know I,m having same problem, so cant wait to get your answers!!!
Reply:It sounds like the branch has been broken, or you needed to put a collar of paper or cardboard down where the plant comes out of the ground, so the cut worms can%26#039;t chew the stem.
Reply:Without looking at plants it sounds like you may be are giving them too much water. Tomatoes don%26#039;t need to be watered every day if in pots. Too much water, if plants survive, will cause your fruit to burst open when ripe. Cut back just to keep soil moist, not soaking. Also if in ground, water late at nite. If ground is wet during hottest time of day, it will steam plants. Water when it has enough time to soak deap in ground before sun hits them. Hope this helps and good luck!
Reply:your tomato plant is dying Either to much water or not enough, Is it in a very sunny area it needs lots of sun
Reply:many things can cause the plant to start dying,

if you water in the morning, or noon, try watering in the evening, you can scorch the plant if it is too hot when you water

try plant food, or adding soil to the dirt there planted in, as they may not be getting enough nutrition

see if there are any bugs eating off the tomato plant, this can also kill itloan
